The cultivation levels of Battle Through the Heavens (斗破苍穹 Doupo Cangqiong) are among the easiest to follow in any donghua. Everything is built on Dou Qi (fighting qi) and climbs through clearly named “Dou” ranks – from a boy’s first Dou Qi to Dou Di, the legendary peak of the Dou Qi continent. Names below use pinyin plus the most common English rendering, since subtitles differ.
All levels from lowest to highest
| # | Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dou Qi (Fighting Qi) | Split into stages 1–9; Xiao Yan was stuck at stage 3 for three years |
| 2 | Dou Zhe (Fighter) | Dou Qi condenses into a cyclone – real cultivation begins |
| 3 | Dou Shi (Fight Master) | Dou Qi can be released outside the body |
| 4 | Da Dou Shi (Great Fight Master) | Dou Qi forms protective armour |
| 5 | Dou Ling (Fight Spirit) | Dou Qi can be condensed into objects |
| 6 | Dou Wang (Fight King) | Flight using Dou Qi wings |
| 7 | Dou Huang (Fight Emperor) | Top experts of small empires like Jia Ma |
| 8 | Dou Zong (Fight Ancestor) | Begins to manipulate space; a peak existence in Jia Ma |
| 9 | Dou Zun (Fight Venerate) | Top powerhouses of the Central Plains |
| 10 | Ban Sheng (Half Saint) | The threshold between Venerate and Saint |
| 11 | Dou Sheng (Fight Saint) | Counted in “stars”; the strongest of an era |
| 12 | Dou Di (Fight Emperor / Great Emperor) | The absolute peak – unreached for ages |
From Dou Zhe upward, each level is split into “stars”, usually 1–9. A “3-star Dou Huang” means a Fight Emperor at the third star.
Xiao Yan’s path
Xiao Yan is the textbook example of fighting above his level: from stage-3 Dou Qi he climbs every rank, constantly beating stronger opponents with Heavenly Flames, pills and the Buddha’s Fury Fire Lotus. In the novel he reaches Dou Di at around 40 and becomes the Flame Emperor.
Alchemists have their own ranks
Alongside Dou Qi levels there are alchemist grades (tier 1 to tier 9 and beyond). High-grade alchemists are respected even more than fighters of the same level, because their pills help others break through. Yao Lao was one of the finest alchemists on the continent – and Xiao Yan’s teacher.
