Who Is Xiao Yan? Battle Through the Heavens Guide

Xiao Yan (萧炎) is the protagonist of Battle Through the Heavens (Doupo Cangqiong) and the classic “trash to genius” hero: once a prodigy mocked by his whole clan, he becomes the Flame Emperor – a Dou Di of the Dou Qi continent. His journey is tied to three things: his teacher Yao Lao, the Flame Art (Fen Jue) and the Heavenly Flames.

From genius to “trash”

Xiao Yan condensed Dou Qi very young, but around 11–12 his Dou Qi vanished overnight and he stayed stuck at stage-3 Dou Qi for three years, becoming the laughing stock of his clan. The low point came when his fiancée Nalan Yanran came to break off the engagement. Fifteen-year-old Xiao Yan answered with the famous line “Thirty years east of the river, thirty years west – don’t bully the young for being poor!” and set a three-year duel at the Misty Cloud Sect.

Yao Lao, the Flame Art and Heavenly Flames

The secret: the soul of Yao Lao, sleeping in his mother’s ring, had been absorbing his Dou Qi to awaken. Yao Lao takes Xiao Yan as his disciple, teaches him alchemy and gives him the Flame Art – a technique that can evolve without limit by swallowing Heavenly Flames. Xiao Yan gathers flame after flame, starting with the Green Lotus Core Flame, and his signature move, the Buddha’s Fury Fire Lotus, grows ever stronger.

In episodes 215–218, Xiao Yan receives an Emperor-level soul from his ancestor Xiao Xuan and rushes to the Burial Heaven Mountains to rescue his father from the Soul Clan.
