Who Is Wang Lin? Renegade Immortal Protagonist Guide

Wang Lin (王林) is the protagonist of Renegade Immortal (Xian Ni), the xianxia novel by Er Gen adapted into a hit 3D donghua by Tencent. He starts as an ordinary village boy whose talent is judged so poor that he barely gets into a sect – and ends up walking every realm up to Heaven Trampling, driven by one promise: to bring his wife Li Muwan back to life.

⚠️ Spoiler warning: this guide mentions events from the novel far beyond the current donghua episodes.

Wang Lin at a glance

Why Wang Lin is different

Wang Lin is not a “chosen genius”. He is quiet, careful, ruthless to enemies and fiercely loyal to family and to anyone who once helped him. His story is a chain of costly choices: to protect the person he loves he has to defy heaven itself – which is exactly what the title means. The stronger he becomes, the more he loses, and his real motivation is never power but his promise to Li Muwan.

His journey in short

• Heng Yue Sect: accepted at the lowest position, he finds the Heaven Defying Bead and begins cultivating against all odds.
• Revenge and exile: after his family and clan are destroyed, he turns cold and hunts his enemies across several cultivation nations.
• Li Muwan: his greatest love; her death from exhausted lifespan becomes the reason he keeps climbing.
• Luo Tian arc (current donghua): returning under the alias Xu Mu, he is hunted by the entire Yao family – see Wang Lin hunted by the Yao family and Yao Bingyun.
• Ending: he reaches Heaven Trampling and finally fulfils his promise.

Wang Lin’s cultivation

Wang Lin passes through every Step of the system: Qi Condensation, Foundation Establishment, Core Formation, Nascent Soul and beyond, then the Nirvana realms, the Void realms and Heaven Trampling. The full list with Chinese names is here: Renegade Immortal cultivation realms.
